Most kids undoubtedly love bicycling. But Peter Hillary had another passion in life. He liked climbing. However, not monkey bars or little backpacking day hikes. In fact, his climbing was of the serious sort taking on mountains with his father.
Peter was born in Auckland, New Zealand. Strapped to his father, he climbed his first mountain, Mount Fog, in New Zealand's Southern Alps. His father, Sir Edmund Hillary at age 33, along with a Sherpa mountaineer, Tenzing Norgay, had been the first climbers known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. He had also been named in “Time Magazine” as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
After his first climb, climbing became a passion. In 1990, Peter climbed to the top of Mount Everest, making him and his father the first father–son duo to achieve that distinction.
Peter has over 38 mountaineering expeditions under his belt. In addition to Everest, he has climbed Makalu West Pillar, Mt Vinson, Aconcagua, Lhotse, Amadablam and Carstenz Pyramid. He almost included Pakistan’s K2, which is the second highest mountain in the world, but just a few meters from the summit, a storm was so severe he had to turn around and almost lost his life on the descent. Seven of his friends did not make it.
Adventure runs in his blood. In addition to mountain climbing, he has jetboated the sacred Ganges River with his father and skied Mt. Aspiring in the Southern Hemisphere. He has fed and filmed sharks in the Coral Sea. And to top it off, he is a commercial airline pilot.
At present, Peter is a much sought after motivational speaker. He has spoken to thousands all over the world. His main message is to never lose sight of where one wants to go; be focused, be passionate, learn self-reliance, have fun, demonstrate integrity and use good judgment with intuition to be a survivor.
