Peter Hillary
Peter Hillary was born into an adventurous family. He's the son of Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to scale Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, located in the Himalayan Range on the border between Nepal and China. He has become an accomplished mountaineer in his own right, as both a guide and as an explorer. He has also something of a side career as a motivational speaker.
His most noted accomplishment by the popular media was his ascent with his father to the height of Everest once again, marking the first time that a father and son climbed to the summit together. The fact that his father was 90 years old at the time only added to the significant achievement.
In 1995, he barely survived a terrible storm on the K2 mountain on the border between Pakistan and China that killed seven of his companions. He had to turn back before reaching the summit, but escaped with his life.
He has carved a new overland route to the South Pole, and carved out a high altitude Himalayan traverse that has yet to be replicated. He also accomplished the first ski descent of Mt. Aspiring.
Among his accomplishments as a guide, he helped Niel Armstrong to land a small airplane at the North Pole. He runs an adventure travel company that specializes in guiding trips through the Himalayas and Antarctica. He also writes about his experiences and helps to market various products related to mountaineering. He is the author of several books, including "A Sunny Day in the Himalayas" and "First Across The Roof Of The World."
